Jimmyjane Afterglow Candle — black currant

11146AFTE_1Massage candles really do it for me.  It’s like some of my favorite things – perfume, candles, body lotion, massage oil –  in one amazing product.  On top of that you get the sensual warmth of the melted wax that is so, so relaxing.  Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candles are my favorite of all that I’ve tried, bar none.  This one — the black currant — is my second and I’m pretty much just as pleased with it as I was the first.  The only issue I had with it was the scent, but we’ll get to that later.

11146AFTE_3One of the best things about Jimmyjane products is the packaging.  It’s very upscale, very tasteful and discreet.  A white box with colored accents (in this case, dark red for the black currant), a grey band around the center and unobtrusive yet easy to read text describing the product.  It all adds up to a look that is clean, modern, simplistic yet luxurious.

Ingredients are listed on the box as natural blend of spa-grade ingredients features a precise balance of Jojoba, Shea Butter, Vitamin E, Soy, Aloe and other botanical extracts to offer silky sensation at the perfect temperature.

11146AFTEInside the box you find the candle itself, in a square, frosted glass holder as well as an application brush, a book of matches (how convenient is that!) and an instruction manual.  The candle/holder is 3 inches wide by 3.75 inches high, holds 5 oz of wax and burns for up to 42 hours.  This is assuming you only burn it, however, and doesn’t take into account the wax/oil you’ll use for massage.  I got 4 multi hour uses out of my first one. The brush is small; about an inch and a half wide with soft, black bristles that are about an inch and a half long.

090930_PRODUCT_AFTERGLOW_MC_NEWICON_AG2The candle is easy to use; simply light the wick and let it burn for a bit.  After about a half an hour you’ll have a small pool of melted wax that is plenty to begin your massage.  If you think you’re going to have a longer massage session or do a full body, let it burn a bit longer.  When you’re ready to use the melted wax, be sure to blow the candle out!

I’ve found it most easy to use the applicator brush, though a lot of people don’t like them.  I love it.  I simply dip the bristles into the melted wax and smooth that brush with soft, broad strokes, across my partner’s skin.  The wax/oil applies in a thin, warm swathe that feels amazing and is easy to spread.  If I need more, I can dip again but a single brush full of oil covers a really decent amount of surface.

You can also tip the holder and pour the wax/oil into your hand or onto the body but I’ve found this to be a bit messy.  The oil drips down the sides of the holder and you end up using far more than you need.

090930_PRODUCT_AFTERGLOW_MC_NEWICON_01The candle is very, very soft to begin with, even cold.  You can literally wipe your finger across it and it will melt lightly under the heat of your skin.  It feels almost like a balm rather than a candle.  The oil/melted wax rubs into the skin incredibly well, leaving NO waxy feeling at all.  It’s like a premium massage oil and it performs beautifully in use, giving a reduction of friction but not a greasy feel.  I haven’t found it to be staining at all; a quick wash of anything you may spill it on and it comes right out.

These candles are highly, highly scented and you are quite enveloped in the scent you choose even before you light it.  The scent lingers a long time on the skin and in the air so choose your scent wisely.  I chose the black current this time (the cucumber water last) and I was less than happy with it.  The candle performed great and I’ll definitely continue to use it but I expected a berry like scent, something fruity and it was immediately apparent I was wrong when I opened the box.  Jimmyjane say of the black current scent: ” This dark, ripe berry delights with a sudden, succulent pop. Black Currant is sweet, but not too sweet – like a good lover. Accept the invitation.”  I found it to be lacking in berry or succulence.  It was…  very viney yet floral smelling.  My first thought was honestly roses.  Very potpourri-ish.  I like the scent, it’s just not what I was expecting.

I’ll most definitely order more of these candles – from Eden Fantasys, of course! –  but I think I’ll stick with the cucumber water or perhaps the dark vanilla, just to be sure they’re more familiar and a bit more unisex.
